Raise your hand if you love the salty sweet combination of chocolate and salt? Mmmmm…….. Now have you ever tried the combination of chocolate and potato chips? Although it might sound like a weird recipe at first, when you think about it, it makes sense. Like chocolate covered pretzels, or chocolate covered peanuts or almonds. Chocolate covered chips are very easy to make, and are quite satisfying to crunch into because of the combination of the sweet softness of the chocolate with the salty crunchiness of the chip. Perfection.
Would you like to know how to make them? I don’t blame you. It really couldn’t be much easier! First, I went to Smart & Final to buy the ingredients I needed, because I can get just about everything on my list there in one store. When I want to be in and out fast (especially on a Saturday), it is much quicker than a warehouse store, and with no annual fee. Here’s what you’ll need:
- First Street Milk Chocolate Chips, 11.5 oz.
- First Street Wavy Potato Chips, 16 oz.
- First Street Powdered sugar, 32 oz.
- Sea salt
First, get a double boiler set up. This is much easier than it sounds, I promise! Get a small-medium sized saucepan, and put a couple of inches of water inside. Place a bowl inside of the pan. Make sure that the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water, because it can burn the chocolate. Pour the chocolate chips inside the top bowl. Turn the stove on medium-low, while stirring the chocolate chips. The chocolate will slowly begin to melt. Keep stirring until the chocolate chips are fully melted.
Turn off the heat, but leave the chocolate on the pan on the stove. Just remember that the stove, pan, and bowl are still hot! Carefully dip a chip into the chocolate halfway, then pull out. Shake off the excess chocolate into the bowl, and place on a Silpat or covered baking sheet to cool. I sprinkled a little bit of powdered sugar on half of the chips, and a little bit of sea salt on the other half.
Once the pan is full of chocolate covered chips, I like to place it in the fridge to speed up the cooling process… I get a little anxious and have a hard time waiting! Check them after about 20 minutes, and remove once they are cooled and the chocolate has hardened. You can eat them immediately, or keep them in an airtight container.
Now let’s talk ingredients. I made the same recipe twice, side by side.
I found most of the ingredients in the baking aisle at Smart & Final. In one bowl I used Smart & Final’s First Street brand of milk chocolate chips, and in the other bowl I used Nestle’s milk chocolate chips. I was quite surprised at how well the First Street chocolate melted. It was less waxy than the other brand, and was nice and smooth on the chips. I also used First Street brand potato chips, as well as Ruffles potato chips.
Both chips tasted great- the only difference I really noticed were the size of the ridges. And when it came time to sprinkle a little powdered sugar on these guys, I used the First Street powdered sugar vs the C&H sugar. I couldn’t tell a difference at all!
You’ve got to give these chocolate covered chips a try! My kids give them two chocolatey thumbs up.
