My kids LOVE playing on our iPad, and I am always on the hunt for fun and educational apps for them to play. I recently discovered Disney’s Mickey’s Magical Math World app, which is an awesome new app where kids join Mickey, Minnie, and friends on a fun-filled space adventure that explores math concepts in a fun and exciting way. Basically, the kids think they’re just playing, but they’re actually learning math concepts at the same time!
The Disney Imagicademy apps include Mickey’s Magical Math World, Disney Imagicademy Parents, both available in the Apple App Store now, and Mickey’s Magical Arts World, which will be available in the Apple App Store on February 12, 2015. In honor of our new favorite app, I decided to throw a Disney Imagicademy party for some of my kids’ friends to play along with their parents. We had such a great time together, and I wanted to share some of the fun we had at our party with you!
Since the setting for Mickey’s Magical Math World is in outer space, I thought it would be perfect to serve a few large pizzas to our guests, reminiscent of Red Rockett’s Pizza Port in Tomorrowland with the space theme. (Yes, we go to Disneyland quite a bit!) Since Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, and Pluto are all the main characters in the app, I bought all of the characters from The Disney Store to include on the table. I also bought some navy fabric with sparkly silver glitter that reminded me of space, and used that as a backdrop for the table.
After guests ate their pizza and soda, they moved to the activity table I had set up for the kids. I covered the table in bright yellow paper because it reminded me of the rocket ship on the app. We are Disney toy collectors at our house, so I brought out some of our small Disney figures that we’ve bought from the Disney Store through the years, and spelled out and wrote the word Imagicademy. The figures were to be later used as counters, and were perfect for sorting and grouping like items together.
I let the kids use their imagination and draw and create their own artwork to go with the app all over the yellow paper tablecloth. Each guest received a pack of crayons, markers, an Imagicademy drawing pad, a black and white coloring puzzle, and a colorful Disney puzzle.
I let them get creative and draw their favorite characters from the app. I was blown away with their art skills!
When some of the boys were finished with their pictures, they started making paper airplanes out of the extra paper and seeing which designs traveled the furthest.
I had a set of wood tangram shapes for the kids to create with. I loved watching them create rocket ships, stars, flowers, and more with the shapes.
As a former elementary school teacher, I was pleased to see all of the creative designs the kids came up with! I also gave each child a set of paper tangrams, and challenged them to make a rocket from them, while showing them a sample. All of them were able to make it, most with little or no help!
After the kids were finished drawing and creating at the activity table, we moved on to the living room to have fun with the new app! In Mickey’s Magical Math World kids learn shape recognition and identification with Mickey, playing with numbers and patterns in Minnie’s Robot Playground, learn early number concepts with Donald, counting to 10 and early problem solving with Daisy, and experimenting with shapes, pattern, and sorting skills with Goofy.
We used Apple TV to display the app on the TV, and let the kids take turns playing with the app on the iPad while the other kids watched the activities on the screen. When the app first came on, some of the girls thought that they could touch the TV screen to play the game, as if it were a giant iPad! It was really cute. After some instructions, they realized that they didn’t have to all stand up right next to the tv and put their hands on the screen to play. 😉
The kids all LOVED the app, from the very youngest of the group to the very oldest- there was something there for everyone!
The parents were all really impressed with the game, and were happy to know that they could download it on their iPads at home once they saw how much fun their kids had with it.
We had such a fun time at our Disney Imagicademy party, and can’t wait to play more with our new app! If you have kids at home, I know that they will love Mickey’s Magical Math World. It’s a great way to teach early math concepts, and the kids really loved the variety of the different games.
I hope this party post has inspired you to download and get started with the coolest app around. Trust me, your kids will thank you!
