I love a good recycled craft, and today’s moss planter tutorial I’m sharing with you is pretty amazing! It’s a great way to add a natural element inside your home.
Want to take a guess at what this gorgeous moss pot is made from? A plastic yoghurt container! Pretty crazy, right? Keep reading to see how easy this moss planter recycled craft is to make!
With six of us in my family, we go through a lot of yoghurt. It’s an easy part of our breakfast that doesn’t take any prep time, is healthy, and is easy and quick on those busy school day mornings. Instead of throwing out our last Mountain High Yoghurt plastic container, I decided that I would create a pretty moss planter.
Also, if you were wondering why yoghurt is spelled with an “h” in it, it’s because it’s more similar to how the word is spelled in European countries. It’s only appropriate since Mountain High Yoghurt has been made the Old World way since it was first produced back in the 1970’s.
Moss Planter Recycled Craft
- Mountain High Yoghurt plastic container
- Moss (I used the sheet version found at my local craft store)
- Glue gun
Before you start you’ll need to wash your yoghurt container with dish soap and water, then dry it thoroughly.
Take the sheet of moss and wrap it around the plastic container tightly, tucking down 1-2 inches along the top of the container. This will give you an idea of how wide the moss needs to be to wrap around the container. Cut the moss so that an inch or two overlaps along the side of the container.
Next, trim about two inches below the bottom of the yoghurt container. This won’t be perfect, and that’s okay for now, as long as the moss can wrap around the bottom of the container so that it won’t be seen.
Now that your moss sheet is all cut out, it’s time to glue it in place! Wrap the moss around the yoghurt container again and adjust as needed, so that the moss overlaps along the top and bottom and looks even.
Starting at one side of the moss, place a few strips of hot glue vertically along the container, then carefully press down on the moss where you glued. Repeat until the entire side of the container is covered in moss.
Flip the extra moss over the top of the container, and glue it down to the top inside.
Place the container on its’ side and cut a few slits in the extra moss at the bottom. Glue down each flap of moss.
Now it’s time to add some flowers. You can add real or silk flowers- whichever you prefer!
Find a lovely place in your home that could use some freshening up, and add your beautiful new moss planter. It will be a great conversation piece next time your friends stop by!
I bet they won’t be able to guess what you made it out of… it will be our little secret! 😉
