Closet Makeover with Chalkboard Paint and Wallpaper

May 15, 2017 By Laura 2 Comments

Want a quick and easy way to update a room without spending a fortune and very little time and effort?  Today I’m sharing with you a simple closet makeover with chalkboard paint and wallpaper that is so easy.  It’s a great way to get a lot of bang for your buck!

Quick and easy kids closet makeover with chalkboard paint

My husband and I have been working our way through our home, replacing, remodeling, and updating almost everything.  The boys’ room is almost finished, but their old closet doors hadn’t been put on.  They were old, dirty, and the boys and I weren’t thrilled about putting them back on the boys’ closet.

However, the boys had been without closet doors for a while though, so we figured it was time to create a closet makeover for them so they finally could close their closet doors.

While at Target I saw that they sell Devine Color by Valspar Chalkboard Paint and Peel-and-Stick Removable Wallpaper.  I was intrigued!  I finally had a solution for my boys’ closet that would make them excited about having their closet doors back on.

First we cleaned the closet doors with hot water and a little bit of dish soap.  Then we painted the doors a clean white.

After the white paint was dry, I painted the top rectangular panel of both doors with two coats of the black chalkboard paint, making sure to let the paint dry between coats. What an improvement!

After just two coats, the closet doors looked SO much better.  While the paint was drying, it was time to work on the inside of the closet.

The boys don’t need much closet space since most of their clothes are folded in their own dressers.  We recently made a cool industrial style clothes rack from metal pipes that took up less space than a long wooden clothes rod.  Because of the extra space, we were able to put the boys’ bookshelf in the closet to hold their tv, a few favorite toy sets, and some books.

Here’s what the closet looked like before-

They were okay, but a bit boring, and definitely in need of a little TLC.  I decided to add the Devine Color by Valspar Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper to the back of the closet, so that it looked like white bricks.

The wallpaper is pretty cool because it is textured and has shading to make it look more realistic.  It also comes in a variety of colors and patterns, so you can match it to different styles of rooms.

I installed the wallpaper all myself, but I think it would probably be easier to have two sets of hands instead of one.  First, I measured how long I needed the first piece to be, then cut with scissors.

To place the wallpaper on the wall, I just peeled off the top bit of the paper backing, and stuck the wallpaper on a bit at a time, making sure to smooth it out as I went.  It was surprisingly easy and the wallpaper went on very smoothly.  If I got an air bubble underneath, it was very easy to peel up a little bit of the paper, then reposition and smooth it out again.

I love the finished closet makeover!  It looks just like whitewashed bricks in the back of the closet.  The seams blend right into each other and are hard to spot.

After putting the painted closet doors back on, I came up with a fun way to display some of the kids’ artwork on the doors.  I found a cafe rod and drapery clip rings at Target, both in brushed nickel.  I knew they would be perfect for the boys to hang up their art!

I hung the rod at the top of one of the chalkboard panels on one of the closet doors, then hung the clips on the rod.

Aren’t those clips just perfect for holding kids’ artwork, showing off school papers, and awards?  I scored a wood letter “A” at Target (my son’s initial) and also hung it on one of the clips.  The clips are even great for holding hats!

My boys LOVE their new closet doors the entire closet makeover.  They really look great in their room with the black.  It ties in with some of the picture frames and the fish tank they have in the room as well.

But why stop at just the closet?  While we were updating, we switched out some of the accessories in the boys’ room.  We found an awesome “Ride the Wave” wall hanging at Target that looked perfect on the boys’ rustic wood accent wall!  It was especially perfect for my SoCal beach-loving boys.

My nautical loving heart fell in love with these adorable wooden boats with their fabric sails that I also scored at Target.  They look great with the new lamp and the chunky wood ball I bought.

After seeing how easy it was to update the boys’ closet, I decided to add a little bling to the girls’ closet doors too and give them a mini closet makeover!  Here’s what they looked like before-

I remembered seeing a pretty metallic gray Devine Wallpaper at Target when I was shopping for the boys, so I went back and picked some up to add the front of the closet doors to add some fun color and pattern to the room.

The girls’ room is all white, purple, and gray, so the colors were perfect!

For the girls’ closet makeover, I cut a piece of wallpaper that would fit inside each of the four panels on the closet doors.  I also had to cut a small extra piece to each panel so that the decorative design was wide enough.

I figured out that it was easier to cut the wallpaper panels a little longer rather than too short.  I used the end of one side of the scissors to carefully cut right along the straight edge of the closet door panel to cut off the excess wallpaper in a straight line.

A plastic putty knife (that I already had out from another project I’m working on) was the perfect tool for rubbing along the installed wallpaper to smooth it out and make sure there were no air bubbles.  It also helped along the edges to make sure they were pressed down all the way.

I’m so thrilled with the girls’ closet makeover!  The wallpaper has a pretty metallic sheen that glistens in the light of the chandelier hanging in my girls’ room.

Part of the girls’ bedding is gray and white with the exact same pattern on it as the closet doors.  We couldn’t believe our luck in matching it so well to their existing rooms!

This is the most amazing closet makeover ever. Love the chalkboard and faux brick interior. And the wallpaper on the girl closet doors is so pretty.
