Everything is cuter in mini form, and this mini pinata DIY I’ve got for you today is no exception. I mean, really, just look at this cute little thing!
Mini pinatas are a fun addition to any birthday party because they’re colorful, perfectly size, and cost me absolutely nothing to make! The only cost involved is the candy inside, which makes it a really cost-effective and cute party favor and or decoration.
If you enjoy getting crafty and want to create a unique and adorable party favor, then this mini pinata DIY is for you. Follow the simple directions below to make your own. Be ready for all the swooning that will happen when your party guests get their cute mini pinata!
Mini Pinata DIY
Supplies:
- Balloons (I used regular sized balloons)
- Newspaper
- Fringe scissors (regular scissors will work too)
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 cup water
- Tissue paper (in your party colors)
- Glue gun or other adhesive
Directions:
STEP 1. Blow up the balloons to your desired piñata size and tie. I wanted mine to be able to fit in one hand, so I didn’t blow it up too big. Blow one balloon for each pinata you’ll be making.
Cut newspaper into 1″ strips, then cut each strip into smaller rectangles about 1-2″ long. Mix up some paper mache paste by adding 1/2 cup water to 1/2 cup flour. Stir until smooth. This paste recipe works really great, and I love that it uses ingredients that everyone already has at home.
STEP 2. You can use a brush for the next part, but it really is easier and will take less time if you just get in there and use your fingers. It’s actually kind of fun to get in there and get your hands dirty but you can do this any way you choose.
I dipped two fingers into the paste, and then rubbed the paste onto a section of the balloon. Add some newspaper strips over the paste, overlapping them and adding more glue over the top as you go. I tried to do two layers of newspaper over the balloon so that the newspaper layer would be thick enough to hold the candy that would be going inside.
Keep layering paste and newspaper. Make sure to add a thin layer of paste over the top of the newspaper pieces to smooth it all down and hold it together.
Once the entire balloon is covered with newspaper, hang the balloon upside down to dry. Let it dry until it’s completely dry before going to the next step.
STEP 3. Once the balloon is completely dry, pop it with a pin in the bottom opening.
Use scissors to cut a small hole in the bottom so you can fit candy inside the mini piñata. Fill the pinata with candy.
Because I like everything to match and look great, I used the new Hershey birthday-themed products. They’re awesome because the new Hersey birthday products are all wrapped to go with specific birthday party colors and themes, so they’re perfect for good bags, party decorations, party games, and activities. I found the new Hershey birthday candy at the end of the Celebrations aisle at Walmart on its’ own display, and you can also find most birthday-themed products at other select retailers.
STEP 4. To seal the candy inside the pinata, I glued a piece of tissue paper about 6 sheets thick over the hole. Cut strips of tissue paper about 1″ wide. It’s easiest to do this if you keep the tissue paper folded so there’s less cutting.
Use fringe scissors to cut 3/4 of the way up along the tissue paper without cutting all the way to the top.
STEP 5. Use a glue gun or glue to cover the entire balloon in tissue paper fringe, starting at the bottom. If you use a glue gun, be careful. It’s very hot and can easily burn your fingers through the thin tissue paper. You can also use glue if you don’t trust yourself with a glue gun.
Start at the bottom by wrapping a piece of tissue paper fringe across the balloon horizontally. I used two layers to make it thicker so you can’t see the newspaper underneath.
Layer different colors of paper for a colorful, fun piñata. You can make each pinata match each other, or make each one unique. You’re done once the entire piñata is covered.
To finish off the top, I made a small fringe circle and used glue to hold it together, then added it to the top of the mini pinata.
Isn’t it cute?! I’m in love with the sweet finished product!! These mini pinatas are so small and sweet.
Any kid or grown up would love getting these as a party favor filled with delicious Hershey candy! My kids just couldn’t get enough of them.
