My kids are finally out of school for the summer… yay!! To prepare for the upcoming chorus of “I’m bored” and “there’s nothing to do,” I created a fun summer bored jar with some paint, paper, a mason jar, and scallop FrogTape® Shape Tape.™

When my kiddos are bored and complain that they have nothing to do, they can reach their little fingers into my bored jar, and grab a piece of paper that will have an activity written down that they can do.
Bye bye boredom! I love the bold blue waves on my jar- perfect for summer! They were so easy to make.
Want to make your own? Here’s how!
Summer Bored Jar:
Supplies:
- Scallop FrogTape’s Shape Tape™
- Blue paint in various shades (make use your paint can be used on glass)
- Paintbrush
- Mason jar
- Rubbing alcohol
- Paper and pen
Directions:
Clean the mason jar by wiping rubbing alcohol along the outside of it. This will help clean the jar, and make the paint adhere better.
Paint three coats of white paint onto entire outside of the jar, letting the paint dry the recommended time in between each coat.
Cut two pieces of scallop Shape Tape™ to fit around the jar, plus a little bit extra to overlap. Stick one of the pieces a few inches from the bottom of the vase, then skip a few inches and place the next piece of Shape Tape™ down. The tape is so easy to apply because it comes with a slit liner on the back of the tape. Simply remove one half of the liner, position the tape on the jar, and then remove the other half to place it down.
Make sure to press hard with your fingers to seal the edges down. You can also use a squeegee to seal the edges down a second time to ensure that the paint doesn’t bleed through. Shape Tape™ is treated with patented Paint Block Technology which forms a micro-barrier that seals the edges of the tape and helps prevent tape bleed so that your edges are nice and clean.
Paint the very bottom of the jar navy blue. Paint the layer above the tape a medium blue or turquoise color. Let dry for the recommended amount of time for your specific paint. Repeat this process twice, so that you have 3 coats of each color, making sure to let each coat dry thoroughly between coats. Carefully remove the Shape Tape™ from the jar.
For the portion of the jar that’s still white (the top of the jar and the second set of waves from the bottom), choose which two colors you would like to paint each section. I used a paintbrush to hand paint in between the waves. Apply 2-3 coats of these colors, so that your whole jar is painted. Let dry completely.
I wanted my jar to look shiny and wet to mimic the ocean waves, so I applied a glossy clear coat of spray sealer over the top. This gives the vase a nice shine, and also helps to seal the paint.
Cut up some small pieces of paper, and brainstorm with the kiddos some ideas of fun things they can do this summer when they’re bored. Write one idea on each piece of paper, fold up the paper, and place inside the jar.
Now when the kids get bored, you have an easy and quick way to get them busy again!
I love how versatile the scallop Shape Tape™ is. If you turn it one way, you’re painting waves. If you turn it the other way, you’re painting scallops.
