I’ve never met a fruit that I didn’t like. And when the fruit is frozen and blended in a sweet smoothie, those fruits become even more irresistible! I mean honestly, have you ever had a bad fruit smoothie? Today I’m sharing an easy blueberry smoothie that is healthy, quick to make, and is a delicious staple at our house.
Smoothies are my go-to breakfast of choice because they taste great, are healthy, and just take a couple of minutes to make. This berry smoothie recipe gets its’ sweetness from a banana and some vanilla Greek yogurt, which is also a nice protein boost to this fruit-based smoothie. Give it a try!
Berry Smoothie Recipe:
- 1 cup frozen mixed berries (I used Wyman’s frozen strawberries, blueberries, and cherries with kale)
- 1 cup vanilla Greek yogurt (regular vanilla yogurt is fine too)
- 1 banana (preferably frozen)
- 1/2 cup milk or soymilk
Blend all the ingredients in a blender until mixed completely. Pour and enjoy!
This recipe makes one large glass, or two smaller glasses. My kids can’t get enough of this smoothie because it’s nice and sweet, and has a great purple color too!
Not a berry fan? No problem! You can substitute any frozen fruit for the berries, and it will still taste amazing. Did you know that frozen fruits and vegetables are most often nutritionally equal to (and sometimes even better) than fresh fruits and vegetables? It’s true!
There was a study done recently by The University of California, Davis in partnership with the Frozen Food Foundation that proved this. Freezing fruits and vegetables is nature’s pause button, and is an easy way to buy fresh produce that is not in season without paying outrageous prices for it. Frozen food lasts much longer, too, which means that I’m not wasting money on food that goes rotten in the fridge before I get a chance to make and eat it.
Buying frozen fruit for my smoothies is pretty inexpensive, too, considering one smoothie at Jamba Juice is about $5, and a big bag of frozen fruit that will make MANY smoothies for my entire family of 6 costs about $10. Smoothies are a great way to fit in the recommended amounts of fruit to my kids, since nearly 80% of Americans don’t eat the recommended amount of fruit each day (and nearly 90% not eating the recommended amount of vegetables per day- yikes!). Eating a diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables is more important than ever now, too, with the increase in the rates of chronic diseases among all age groups.
