Can you believe that summer is practically here? Today I’m sharing how to decorate a camping cake for a backyard camping party, camping trip, or just for fun!
Earlier this week I shared my backyard camping party with you and shared some of my best camping party ideas. I love having fun cakes at my parties and adding my own personal touch to them to go with my party theme, but sometimes I just don’t want to spend the hours required to bake and frost my own cake.
For my backyard camping cake, I made it easy on myself and started with a store-bought cake!
I found a great-looking cake for only $8.99 at the store, then added some paper trees, pinecones, and a realistic-looking bear toy (post contains affiliate links- thanks for supporting the blog!) of my kids’ to take the cake from boring to breathtaking!
How to Decorate a Camping Cake
Making the Forest Trees
To make the paper trees, I used my Sizzix Big Shot die cutting machine and the Pine Tree die.
I did this by creating a Sizzix sandwich with the materials to get them ready to cut.
First, stack a cutting pad, some green cardstock, the die face down, then another cutting pad on top.
Roll it all through the Big Shot and you’ll end up with perfectly cut trees!
To add the trees to the cake, I simply stuck the paper trunks down into the back of the cake. To reinforce the trees, I also hid a toothpick behind each trunk. I used three different shades of green to make three different trees.
Adding Extra Details to the Camping Cake
My kids have a big selection of Schleich animal toys- they’re our favorites since they’re SO realistic and are very durable and will last forever!
I used one of their bears (cleaned first, of course!) to decorate the camping cake by placing it in front of the trees and pressing down just a little on the top to keep it in place. Easy!
Next I added some decorative pinecones I already had and placed at the base of the cake, then added another Schleich toy, this time a fox, on the other side of the base of the cake.
In just 10 minutes I totally decorated a fun camping cake without having to deal with frosting piping bags, a messy countertop, and a hot kitchen. Score!
Be sure to check out the whole backyard camping party and get inspired to get outside!
I’ll be sharing the Star Wars cake soon that I decorated and shared on Instragram (you can find me there @makelifelovely) that looks like a million bucks, but took just a few minutes to decorate.
This is my favorite way to save time and money on birthday cakes!
