How to Make a Coconut Nest that Your Family Will Love

Learn how to make a darling colorful coconut nest to hold chocolate eggs, jellybeans, or even little baby chicks this Easter! A sweet coconut bird nest is irresistable on an Easter table, as a place card, or can be made with the kids just for fun.

I was recently experimenting in the kitchen with chocolate when I had the idea to make little spring nests out of the chocolate and some coconut. And guess what, my friends? Total success!

I thought about going with the more realistic chocolate brown color to make these coconut nests, but decided I wanted them lighter. Don’t you just love this pretty blue pastel color for spring?

These little nests were so easy and quick to make and are perfect to do with the kiddos for a fun Easter activity. Keep reading to see how to make a coconut nest (or a whole handful of them) of your own!

How to Make a Coconut Nest

Ingredients:

Chocolate melts in any color you like (I used Wilton’s)
Shredded coconut

To create the nests, you can either shape them yourself or use a mold. I used a ceramic egg holder and it worked perfectly.

I also made a coconut nest with the smaller half of a plastic egg. You can even use an egg carton as a mold to make these nests. Get creative!

Directions:

Step 1. Spray the mold

Spray whatever mold you are using with cooking spray so that you can easily remove the nests. Don’t go skimpy on the cooking spray! If you do, your coconut nest might break when you are trying to remove them.

Step 2. Melt the chocolate

Follow the directions on your chocolate melts package to melt the candy melts. I have a small Wilton chocolate melting pot that I use ALL the time and is worth every penny I spent on it. My chocolate pot keeps the chocolate warm so that I don’t have to keep reheating it in the microwave.

The microwave method works too. Just follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the details.

Step 3. Mix it up

Place some coconut in a small bowl then add some melted chocolate to it. Mix the two ingredints thoroughly, then drop the mixture by spoonfuls into your molds.

I didn’t want my chocolate to harden too quickly while I was working with it, so I did this in small batches and made about three nests each time.

Drop a spoonful or two of the coconut mixture in your mold. I used a spoon to push the mixture up the sides of my mold and hollow out a space in the middle so it looked like a real nest.

Let the coconut nest cool, then use a butter knife to trace around the chocolate nests. Carefully pop each nest out of the mold.

If you used enough cooking spray and chocolate, each coconut bird nest should come out fairly easily. Fill with robin egg candy, jelly beans, or any other egg-shaped candy that you’d like!

Just a reminder to be careful. If you leave the eggs in their nests for a few minutes unattended, you just might come back to a nest full of hungry chicks like I did. 😉
