My son recently had a big dinosaur party and I wanted a cool dinosaur dig cake but without a lot of work, since I was already spending so much time on the other party details. The result was this delicious and super easy dinosaur dig cake with chocolate dinosaur fossils and cookie dirt!
Today I’ll show you how I put this cake together in hardly any time!

Dinosaur Dig Cake with Chocolate Fossils
Ingredients:
- Perfect chocolate cake (recipe found here– it was one of my first posts about 5 years ago!)
- OREO Cookies
- White almond bark or chocolate melts ( prefer almond bark because it’s much cheaper and seems to melt better for me)
- Dinosaur mold
Directions:
Step 1. Make the perfect chocolate cake recipe and frosting. This cake tastes incredible and is fairly easy to make. I always get rave reviews from this cake!
Step 2. Place some OREO cookies inside a large Ziploc bag, then remove the air from the bag and seal it. Use a rolling pin to crush the OREOs to look like dirt, then sprinkle on top of the cake so the frosting is completely covered.
Step 3. Melt the white almond bark or chocolate melts, following the directions on the back of the package or with a Chocolate melting pot. A chocolate melter is my go-to kitchen tool because it keeps the chocolate at a consistent warm temperature so you don’t have to melt and remelt constantly in the microwave!
Pour the white chocolate into the dinosaur mold, then place in the fridge for about 15 minutes. Remove once hard, then gently turn the mold upside down and wiggle it to remove the chocolate fossils. They should pop right out.
Step 4. Arrange the chocolate fossils on the top of the cake. I made mine look like a whole dinosaur fossil, but you could also randomly spread the fossils out too.
Told you this cake was easy! This dinosaur dig cake definitely has the wow factor, but without a lot of fancy frosting work or a lot of effort.
At my son’s dinosaur party I placed the cake on top of some tropical leaves that Oriental Trading sent me that were just perfect! Big branches, a log, and a wood platter all added to the natural look I was going for. They have TONS of dinosaur party supplies!
