DIY Binoculars for Kids

I am in full panic party planning mode for my son’s Jungle Safari birthday party this weekend, and I wanted to share with you an easy party favor I came up with that cost me absolutely no money to make- DIY binoculars for kids!

What jungle explorer ventures off into the jungle without bringing along his trusty binoculars?! Not any that are coming to my party, that’s for sure 😉

I’ve been saving up toilet paper rolls for the last few weeks, and I whipped up a batch of these as party favors and for the kids at the party to play with.  They were easy, fast, and free– the best kind of DIY, right?

Whether you or planning a safari or jungle party, going to the zoo with your kids, or even just spending the day at home “pretending,” these binoculars are sure to be tons of fun for your kids!

Supplies:
  • Empty cardboard toilet paper rolls
  • Glue gun
  • Duck tape
  • Black spray paint (matte or glossy)
  • String, yarn, twine, or macrame string (this is what I used)
  • Scissors
Directions:

1.  Pull off any little pieces of toilet paper still left on the roll.  Glue one strip of hot glue across a toilet paper tube longways, and then stick on another tube parallel to it to form the base of the binoculars.  Press together for about 10 seconds to secure it as the glue dries.
2.  Using the black spray paint, paint a couple coats of paint onto the binoculars, making sure to cover the entire thing.  I sprayed inside the binoculars from both ends so that they looked black inside.  Let dry.
3.  Once dry, measure how long you would like your string, yarn, twine, etc. to be, and cut to that size. Wrap a piece of duck tape around the binoculars, tucking the string into the tape on each side of the binoculars to secure it.
Pretty easy, right?  I just whipped up 16 pairs of these for the party I’m throwing this weekend, and can’t wait to see the kids playing with them!
I’ll be sharing tons more details about the upcoming party soon, so be sure to check back to see how it all turned out!
Whether you are planning a safari party or just want something fun to do with your kids, give these DIY binoculars a try!
I’m a huge fan of duck tape- you can see how I used zebra duck tape to inexpensively decorate for my daughter’s Minnie Mouse birthday party here.  I even used it to make a super cool pinata out of a diaper box!
Another favorite party idea of mine is to make individual servings of cake in baby food jars!  So easy, and no time wasted cutting cake!

Ohhh! I will make this for my son. We don’t have those printed duct tapes in any shops here but I will try with patterned paper and use mod podge for clean glue. 🙂
