DIY Cake Pop and Sucker Stand Tutorial

I love making cake pops and homemade suckers for my guests at the birthday parties that I throw for family members. They are very fun to make, and I love how they are all individually packaged, which make them easy to serve. But, they can be a little tricky to display, since they look best standing straight up.

Here’s one easy way I’ve come up with to keep those cake pops and suckers standing straight! It is a really easy and inexpensive cake pop and sucker stand (or “anything on a stick stand),” takes literally minutes to make, and can be customized to fit the colors and style of your party! Oh, and you can keep reusing the same stand, but customize it each time for each different party!

Supplies:

Styrofoam block 1 15/16″ x 3 7/8″ x 11 7/8 ” (or any other size Styrofoam that you like to make your stand- these can be found at any craft store)
Any color/pattern/design tissue paper
Cake pop/sucker stick
Mod Podge (optional) & paintbrush

Directions:

1. Wrap your tissue paper around the Styrofoam block, and wrap the Styrofoam just like you would wrap a present. I used two small pieces of Martha Stewart tissue paper (of course, I love everything Martha!), and just overlapped them in the middle, making sure that I matched up the pattern on the two pieces so the seam blends in.

I kept the plastic wrapping on over the Styrofoam, and used just brushed on a little Mod Podge here and there to help the tissue paper to stick. Go easy on the Mod Podge, because you don’t want it soaking through the tissue paper. Keep it light! Make sure that the top and all four sides are fully covered with the tissue paper, and smooth it all out nice and even. Let dry thoroughly.

2. Decide how many holes you would like in your stand- for the size I used and listed above, I made seven holes, four in the front, and three in the back. You can just eyeball (or measure, if you’re technical like that) where you would like the holes, and use your sucker stick to push a hole into the Styrofoam. Make sure not to push too far down, or your cake pops and suckers will be really low. Try to keep all of the holes the same depth.

Wasn’t that easy? Now you have a cute little stand to hold anything you decide to make on a stick nice and tall and straight. And if you get bored with the color or pattern that you chose, no problem! Just rip it off, and put on new paper! The holes will already be in the Styrofoam, so once you glue on the new paper, you just have to find the holes with your stick, and make new holes in the layer of tissue paper. Easy.

Martha really does make cute tissue paper squares- I’ve bought them from Michaels before. I bought this red with white polka dot tissue paper at Michaels, as well as some really cute Martha skull and crossbones tissue paper that I used for my son’s pirate party. So fun! You could also use wrapping paper, too, if you’d like.

Keep this easy stand in mind the next time you decide to serve cake pops or suckers or anything else that involves a stick at your next get together!
