I’m so excited to share with you something really cool today- DIY dinosaur eggs with a hidden surprise inside!
This dinosaur eggs recipe is super easy, very quick to make, and is a ton of fun for kids to break open to reveal a cool surprise inside.
Kids love everything about these dinosaur eggs!
They are very similar to the diy treasure stones I have made for my kids’ other birthdays.
I’m also sharing a quick and easy dinosaur favor bag tutorial with my Cricut Explore Air 2 machine that makes the perfect bag for holding one of these DIY dinosaur eggs.

Dinosaur Eggs with a Fun Surprise Inside
Supplies:
- 2 cups sand
- 1 cup cornstarch
- Water
- Plastic dinosaurs
Directions:
Step 1. Stir the sand and cornstarch together well in a mixing bowl. Add water, stirring in a small amount at a time, until the dough comes together.
Step 2. Grab a handful of the dough, place a toy dinosaur inside, then add some more dough to form an egg shape and completely cover the dinosaur.
Repeat with the rest of the dough. Place the dinosaur eggs outside to dry for about 2 days, or until each dinosaur egg has completely hardened.
Step 3. Now comes the fun part. Time to crack open some dinosaur eggs!
These dinosaur eggs for kids are hard, but not too hard.
Kids can drop them on the ground to break them, break them open with their hands, or use a small hammer to break them open.
Aren’t they cool?!
My kids pretended that each of their eggs was a dinosaur egg fossil.
I made these dinosaur eggs as party favors for my son’s dinosaur birthday party and the kids LOVED them.
I wish I had made more because they were so excited about tearing open their bags and breaking their diy dinosaur eggs!
I packaged up their dinosaur eggs by making some easy bag toppers with some brown card stock and some vinyl dinosaurs I made using my Cricut Explore Air™ 2 machine machine.
It was so easy and they looked amazing!
I’m sharing the FREE dinosaur fossils cut file so you can make some of your own bag toppers if you’d like.
Seriously, these couldn’t be much easier to make.
First, press here to open the cut file in Cricut Design Space.
Load some white vinyl onto a cutting mat.
Turn the dial on the Cricut Explore Air 2 machine to the vinyl setting, then press “Make It” in Design Space.
Follow the prompts to cut the vinyl.
I guarantee you’ll be impressed with how amazing these vinyl dinosaur fossils turn out.
I made them quite small, and the details that the machine was able to perfectly cut were FANTASTIC!
You can make the dinosaur favor bag topper any size you like depending on the size of the plastic bag you use.
I bought some clear plastic favor bags at the craft store, then placed one dinosaur egg inside each bag.
Next I cut some brown card stock to match the width of the bag, folded the paper in half, then cut each end to make the topper.
Peel and stick a vinyl dinosaur and press it onto the cardstock for the cutest bag topper, perfect for a dinosaur party!
I hope you enjoyed learning how to make dinosaur eggs.
