Getting a box full of heads in the mail is probably the most fun package I’ve ever received!
When FloraCraft asked me to be part of their Foam Head Challenge, the first idea that came to my mind was to create a DIY mummy head with it. Who doesn’t love a good scary mummy for Halloween?
All I bought for this project was some cheap thin drapery lining material at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores. The rest of the easy supplies to create the mummy head I already had, so not only was this Halloween craft easy but very affordable too!

DIY Mummy Head:
Supplies:
- FloraCraft® foam head (these come in male and female- I used the female)
- Thin, white or cream fabric (I used 1/4 yard of drapery lining material that was on sale, but cheesecloth, muslin, and many other material would work well too)
- White liquid glue (Elmer’s, Aileen’s, Mod Podge are all great choices)
- Foam brush
- Tea (optional)
Directions:
Step 1. Cut the fabric into long thin strips. To make it look more “mummy-like,” I cut the first few inches with my scissors, then ripped the rest of the strips to make them look more worn.
Step 2. (Optional) Place a few tea bags into a medium or large bowl, and add some hot water. Stir, then add the fabric strips to the tea water and let sit for a few hours. I left mine overnight.
The difference looks subtle in the photos, but there was a big difference between the pure white strips before and the creamier strips that I used after. Once the strips have reached their desired color, remove from the tea, squeeze the excess tea from them, and place them in the drier on low heat until dry.
The drier also roughs up the material a bit more, which make it look even older and more mummy-ish!
Step 3. Place some liquid white glue in a plastic disposable cup, and add some water to dilute the glue and make it more liquid. Use the foam brush to apply the watered-down glue to the FloraCraft® foam head, a few inches at a time, and place a strip of fabric over the glue. FloraCraft foam heads are sold in Jo-Ann Stores and Michaels. Press down on the fabric, and apply a little more glue over the top of the ends, to make sure that is completely adhered.
Repeat with more fabric strips until the entire head is covered as much as you’d like. Let dry. (My head went in front of the fan to speed up the process).
Pretty easy, right? And look how fun! These mummy heads would look great as a Halloween table centerpiece, maybe even under a large cloche? Or on a mantle or console, along with some other Halloween decorations? This craft is even safe and easy enough for kids to make their own head, which they’ll love.
