I have always dreamed of having a red door. The front porch of my dreams has always been a bold, yet classy red door, complete with a lion knocker, oil rubbed bronze hardware, a beautiful wreath hanging on the door, and seasonal decorations. I am happy to tell you that I recently turned my previously boring front door and porch into the front door of my dreams!
With some new front door paint, new handle, dead bolts, doorknob, a metal address plate, some wood stain, and a few pumpkins and fall mums, I was able to turn my ho hum front door into an inviting and welcoming front door that makes a great first impression, adds a lot of curb appeal, and puts a little smile on my face whenever I come home.
Our home is older, with the original front door that is about 50 years old. It is a very solid, heavy wood door, so we didn’t want to replace it since it is very heavy duty. That being said, I didn’t care for the color or the heavy wood grain look on the door. The door also had a VERY old doorknob with a very basic lock, with no deadbolt, so safety was a concern as well. I’m pretty embarrassed to show you the ugly before, but it just makes the after look that much better, right? 😉
To kick off my front door makeover, Modern Masters was kind enough to send me some gorgeous red front door paint. I chose to use Modern Masters front door paint because I had seen their products at the SNAP Conference for the past few years, and knew that they made quality products that look great. What drew me to their front door paint is that the paint never fades, the door doesn’t need to be sanded, the paint doesn’t need to be sealed, and you can paint and close your door all in one day! Easy peasy.
I figured that if my front door was going to look bold and beautiful, I needed hardware that was going to look bold and beautiful too! We ordered everything in oil rubbed bronze- a new modern handle, two different deadbolts (one with an electronic combination key pad), a doorbell, and a brand new metal address sign. Goodbye 1950’s, hellooooo 2015.
Installing the door handle and locks was a bit tricky. It took some research and luck to find the right parts, since the old doorhandle was a 5″ backset, which isn’t standard for newer doors and homes. We finally found a solution when we realized we could buy a 5″ backset deadlatch that would make the newer handles work with the old handle hole in our door. We also found two deadbolt latches that worked with our new deadbolts that we could inset 5″ as well, which was pretty exciting!
To prep the door for painting, all I did was to fill in any small holes with wood filler, remove the hardware, and wipe the wood with a slightly damp cloth to clean it. No sanding, no priming, no extra work! I used a 2″ angled paintbrush to paint on the Modern Masters Front Door Paint. I chose the color Sophisticated from the Front Door Paint collection because it is a gorgeous classic red without being too in your face. There were a few different reds to choose from, and this red was just perfect for me and our family.
I painted three coats on the outside of the door and loved it so much that we actually painted the inside of the door the same color! The paint dried very quickly, and the door was back up in a few short hours. The Modern Masters paint was thick enough, but not too thick. It went on very smoothly, and the color was vibrant and beautiful. I also added a fresh coat of white paint to the outside of the house so that it looked as good as the front door.
I couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out! Of course I couldn’t leave the door alone, as gorgeous as it was.
I bought a lovely fall wreath, a new doormat, some fall pumpkins, a small barrel of mums, and filled my DIY rustic planter box with smaller mums in a few different fall colors.
Coming home now is such a treat for me! When I see my new front doorway my heart skips a beat and I get a little smile on my face. My home is SO much more inviting and welcoming than it was before!
