Lately I’ve kind of had a thing for gold, and have been wanting to include some gold in my Christmas decorating. I love the large, solid leaves of Magnolia trees, so I decided to make a Magnolia leaf wreath, and then spray paint the whole thing a beautiful metallic gold. I LOVE the result!
I love how all of the beautiful details and veins of each leaf are enhanced with the gold paint…
Would you like to make your own? This wreath isn’t just for Christmas. You could also use it during Thanksgiving time all through New Year’s, too, or even longer if you wanted.
I almost forgot to tell you the best part! This wreath does NOT use any wire! For some unexplained reason I don’t like having to mess with wire. So I used a glue gun instead. I just glued each leaf onto a wreath form, and then spray painted the whole thing. It couldn’t be easier!
Supplies:
- Wreath Form (I used a straw wreath form)
- Magnolia Leaves (wiped and dusted off)
- Gold Metallic Spray Paint (I used Krylon)
- Glue Gun
Step #1: Glue down the plain leaves. I glued some leaves on the outside and inside of the wreath first, so that the straw on the wreath couldn’t be seen from the side. Then I glued down all of the main leaves for the wreath, starting on one side, and going around in a circle until the whole wreath was covered.
Step #2: Spray paint the entire wreath gold, spraying lightly. Wait the necessary time between coats, and apply 2-3 light coats. You may choose to seal it with a top coat.
Beautiful, isn’t it? Since we used fresh leaves and this is my first try making this, I’m not sure how long it will last. However, if you want to use this for many years, or don’t have a Magnolia tree accessible, you could always use fake Magnolia leaves, of any other kind of large leaves, real or fake, that you could find. Enjoy!

Did you use real magnolia leaves? Did you do anything to preserve them beforehand?
Laura says
Yes, I did use real Magnolia leaves. I didn’t do anything to them beforehand because I made the wreath for just that season, then I threw it away, knowing it was just temporary. You could definitely use fake magnolia leaves, though, for a wreath that will last much longer!
