Today I’m sharing a sweet heart mobile with you that is the perfect addition above your child’s bed, as Valentine’s Day decor, party decorations, or just for fun!
My girls have big Pottery Barn canopy beds with a white piece of wood that runs along the top, which made it easy to hang these in their room.
You could cut out all of the hearts from felt using a heart template or just by free handing it, but I made the process a LOT easier by using my Sizzix Big Shot die cutting machine and some heart dies. I love that my Big Shot will cut through felt perfectly!
Heart Mobile
Supplies:
- Red felt
- Sizzix Big Shot (optional- you could also use scissors)
- Sizzix Bigz Layered Valentine die (optional)
- Sizzix Bigz Key to My Heart die (optional)
- Clear thread
- String
- Wood dowel
- Glue gun
Step 1. Stack a Sizzix cutting pad, the felt, one of the mentioned dies, and the other cutting pad. Roll the stack through your Big Shot machine to cut out the hearts. You will need two felt hearts for each heart on your mobile for the front and the back. Die cut as many hearts as you will need for your mobile.
Step 2. Arrange all of your hearts into columns that show how you would like them to hang on your mobile. Be sure to vary the different sizes one each string to mix it up, and make sure that each heart has a front and a back. I made three columns, but you might need to use more or less depending on how long your dowel is.
Step 3. Use clear thread (found with the regular thread at Joann) and wrap it around the dowel a few times, then tie a knot to hold it. Repeat for as many strands of hearts that fit on your dowel.
Step 4. Place a heart underneath the piece of string where you would like it to hang, then carefully place some hot glue over the top of the heart. I use thin ribbons of glue rather than big blobs, so that the hot glue won’t show through the felt. Place the matching heart top on top of the heart and string, and press down all over the heart to make sure it sticks.
Repeat for all of the hearts and strings until your mobile looks the way that you would like it. Now simply trim the ends of the thread from the bottom hearts, and tie two pieces of string to the top of the dowel to hang.
Isn’t it sweet? I love this heart mobile hanging over my kids’ beds as a daily reminder that their parents love them.
