My favorite season to be outdoors is definitely summer. Those hot summer days and warm summer nights definitely beckon me outside to lounge in the warm sun, splash around in the pool, and have a cozy back yard fire to roast marshmallows for s’mores. Sounds amazing, right?
To get ready for summer, I spruced up one of my favorite spaces with decor and accessories from one of my favorite stores- World Market! You should already know from my glamping tips and ideas, my DIY lemonade stand from pallets, my Downton Abbey tea party posts (and so many more), that I love love love World Market! They have so many amazing items to choose from, and I love that it is never the same store twice, even though I’m there just about every week.
I’m going to be sharing my top tips with you today on how you can update your outdoor living space for summer!
I live in San Diego and love all things beachy and nautical, so I decided to go with turquoise, blue, and lime green to spruce up the space. I enhanced two different spaces- a lounging area near the pool, and a table area for outdoor meals. I picked up some of my favorite outdoor accessories that had that beachy feel to them that I was going for, and just love the finished space!
For the lounging area, I started with some new pillows and a bold blue and white outdoor mat. I used some plain turquoise pillows that I already had, and added a pop of color and pattern with two large Sufi Tiles outdoor throw pillows and one Turquoise Tiles throw pillow. Mix and match different patterns within the same color family to mix things up and add some bold fun to your space.
I love that the chair and cushions are solid, but the accessories are bold and vibrant and make them pop! They’re also easy to switch out depending on the season, so there is always a neutral palette to start building onto.
No outdoor summer party space is complete without drinks, so I filled my trusty galvanized party tub with ice and a variety of World Market Italian Sodas that I always have on hand… we’re addicted!
Drinks were served in the aqua and gray acrylic stemless wine glasses on the Turquoise Riviera Tile Print Drink Tray that matched perfectly with the Turquoise Tiles pillow I bought. Perfection!
This sweet bird on a stand was another favorite World Market find. It adds some extra height to the tray and the table. This outdoor wood tray table is so easy to set up and is a great way to add some extra snacking and serving space outside. Tray tables are a great way to add extra table space to set up an additional area for drinks, snacks, or magazines. They’re also nice because they’re not permanent, and can be easily taken down for storage and moved to another place in the yard if needed.
Although I love the sun, I wanted some shady space to relax in. I bought a turquoise 9′ black umbrella frame and Lagoon umbrella canopy, which were large enough to give plenty of shade to the lounge chairs underneath. The small paper lantern string lights matched my pillow colors perfectly. At night I can turn them on to add a little ambience to the outdoor space.
And of course there needed to be chocolate… chocolate covered macadamia nuts are most definitely necessary for proper summer relaxing, right? 😉
Next up is the table area that I set up. My absolute FAVORITE part is the unique lighting feature that I created overhead. I fell in love with a large wood oar I found at World Market, and knew that I needed to incorporate it somehow.
First I hung three of these fun bubble glass bottle lanterns onto the wood oar. Next I hung the oar from the overhead beams above the table with some thick jute.
I placed some tealights inside the bottle lanterns, and now they’re set for a dinner party under the stars. Look for unique ways that you can incorporate your favorite products! Can you use them in a different way than they were intended, like I did with the oar?
I also bought two large Polynesian Pineapple candles that smell absolutely amazing! They fit perfectly inside the darling natural seagrass hurricane candle holders that were on the table. Candles are always a great way to add to the atmosphere of an outdoor space, especially when they smell as great as these pineapple ones!
The seagrass at the base of the holders fits perfectly with my nautical beach theme I’ve created. I covered the table with a white tablecloth, ran my new favorite coconut twig runner down the center of the table, and added three glass ball floats around the candles. These small decor items are the frosting on the cake, so don’t forget to add some fun extra pieces when updating your outdoor living space for summer.
I am SO happy with how this lovely turned out! It is so inviting and beautiful, and I love the beachy relaxed vibe it has. I can’t wait to spend lots of time here this summer!
