When I recently decided to have a Nightmare Before Christmas Halloween party, I knew that I had to recreate that scene and have an Oogie Boogie bug platter full of nasty-looking (but tasty and edible) bugs for party guests to chew on.
If you’ve seen Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, then I’m sure you remember the creepy villain, Oogie Boogie. At the end of the movie, he is pulled apart and we see that he is made of all kinds of creepy crawly bugs. Gross, right?
I made up an Oogie Boogie out of burlap, my friends at Oriental Trading sent me some incredible bug candy, and I created an awesome Oogie Boogie bug platter! Keep reading to see how I did it and to make your own.
DIY Oogie Boogie Bug Platter
Supplies:
- Burlap
- Black embroidery floss
- Black felt piece
- Embroidery needle
- Scissors
- Glue gun
- Realistic bugs gummy candy
- Realistic earthworm gummy candy
- Tarantulas gummy candy
STEP 1. Google a photo of Oogie Boogie, then draw and cut his general shape onto two pieces of burlap. The easiest way to do this is to fold over the burlap and cut two pieces at once.
STEP 2. Cut out Oogie Boogie’s eyes and mouth from black felt, then use the glue gun to adhere them onto his face. Use the needle and embroidery floss to stitch around the mouth, making sure to only sew through one piece of the burlap.
STEP 3. Use a glue gun to lightly glue together both burlap pieces, leaving an opening at the bottom for the bugs to “crawl” out of. Use an embroidery needle and black embroidery floss to stitch around the edges of Oogie Boogie, leaving the bottom open.
STEP 4. Stuff Oogie Boogie with newspaper, plastic bags, or any other filler that you would like so that he stands up. Place him along the back of a plate or platter, then fill the platter with the candy bugs.
Isn’t this Oogie Boogie bug platter fun?! It’s the perfect Halloween treat for kids and adults alike, especially those who love The Nightmare Before Christmas!
I also used some of these awesome bugs to top some store-bought cupcakes. I just had them make the cupcakes plain, then added the gummy bugs to the top. They really freaked my kids out, ha!
