I’m convinced that whoever said not to play with your food had no idea what they were talking about. If you look creatively at your food, you can make fun food art for your kids, or even yourself!
I decided to take one of my favorite foods, California ripe olives, and make a fun after-school snack to surprise my kids. Last week was their first week back to school, and they have all been starving by the time we get home!

This panda bear snack is great for adults to make for their kids, but there is cutting involved, so only let your kids make their own if you give them a butter knife that’s not sharp, and you feel comfortable with it.
Panda Bear Food Art:
Ingredients:
- Can of California Black Ripe Olives (small-sized olives)
- Round individual portions of cheese (that come in red wax)
Directions:
Open up your can of olives, remove the excess olive juice, and place in a bowl.
Unwrap the cheese from the wax shell. Cut an olive in half long-ways, and put the two pieces at the top of the round cheese for the panda bear’s ears.
Cut a thin slice across the olive long-ways, so that you have a round black olive oval. Repeat, so you have two ovals. Place these on the cheese to make the panda’s eyes.
Cut a small triangle shape out of an olive for the nose.
Cut a small thin line out of an olive, and place underneath the nose pointing down.
Cut another thin slice, this one a bit longer, and place on the cheese for the panda’s smile.
Last but not least, add another cheese round under the panda head. Cut two olives in half long ways, and place one piece down for each arm, and one piece down for two legs.
What kid (or adult for that matter) could resist taking a bite into this cute critter?! Not only are black olives the perfect pantry staple, a fun and tasty food art choice, AND kid-friendly, but they are SO delicious!!
Just ask this girl… 😉
