If you’re in need of a fun kids birthday party or baby shower theme, then you’ll love this sweet The Very Hungry Caterpillar party I put together!
If you have a child or grandchild, then you’ve no doubt read The Very Hungry Caterpillar book by Eric Carle (affiliate link, which means I get a small percentage of any purchase made at no extra cost to you). As a former elementary school teacher and mama of four, I’ve read it approximately 1,342 times.;)
The story is about a caterpillar that is so hungry and eats through all sorts of food as he prepares to form his chrysalis and turn into a beautiful butterfly.
Very Hungry Caterpillar Party Details
I wanted our Very Hungry Caterpillar party to look great, but to be simple to put together.
I started with some awesome party supplies that my friends at Oriental Trading sent me that made the party planning VERY simple. Be sure to check there for birthday parties or any celebration you have. They’re the best and have a HUGE selection!
Large Very Hungry Caterpillar cutouts from the centerpiece set are a great way to add some color and elements from the story to the party table.
This colorful caterpillar looks right at home in my faux wheat grass, don’t you think?
I used the other food cutouts that came in the set in two different spots on the table.
The watermelon went inside a caterpillar popcorn box filled with colorful green jelly beans and the watermelon went inside a treat box filled with bright orange gumballs.
Colorful lollipops and the lollipop cutout were tucked inside a box filled with the prettiest blue jelly beans I’ve ever seen!
Here’s a tip- for extra height on a party table, simply stack cake plates! I stacked a yellow on top of a blue on both sides of the table for added height and symmetry.
For extra color and to mirror the colorful circle theme in the story, I filled the base of the top cake stand with the same blue candies, then filled the bottom two stands with bright red candies. Love the effect this simple trick gives!
I topped off the other cake stand stack with some adorable Very Hungry Caterpillar party favor boxes. These boxes came with the caterpillars and butterflies already assembled onto the boxes so they were so simple to put together!
The chocolate cake and muffin cutouts were placed in more wheat grass, along with a caterpillar flash card I had from an Eric Carle animal flash card set I already had.
Above the table hung a garland that read “Best Day Ever!” I love that this phrase can be used for a Very Hungry Caterpillar birthday party, a baby shower, a graduation party, or for any party you can dream up.
Did you notice the giant caterpillar party tray with cones in the center of the table? Another great Oriental Trading find that adds a great height to the table and has holes for holding colored treat cones that came with the set.
I filled the cones with popcorn and marshmallows for the kiddos, then stacked the entire stand on a wood stand.
Pears and apples in different shapes and colors add more variety and color to party, and add some nutrition to the table. 😉
I hope you enjoyed our Very Hungry Caterpillar party as much as I loved putting it together! If you’re a long-time reader you might remember that one of my very first posts was a Very Hungry Caterpillar baby shower I put together for a sweet friend.
