Whip up a whole batch of them for your tree or to give as an adorable Christmas gift or gift topper this year.

Don’t you love it when you have an idea in your head and it turns out oven better than you planned? That’s exactly what happened with these adorable snowman Christmas ornaments.

I knew this snowman ornament craft would be cute, but I had no idea they would be THIS cute and quick and cheap to make! Kind of like my Harry Potter ornaments on my Harry Potter Christmas tree last year.

DIY Snowman Ornaments

I’ve made about 12 homemade snowman ornaments already, and I’m on the verge of getting more supplies so I can make a whole army of snowman Christmas tree ornaments.

They make the perfect cute and easy gift for family, teacher gift, treat topper, and more.

Can you believe this entire Christmas craft starts with a baby sock?!

Watch below to see exactly how I made these snowman ornaments!

The supply list and all of the step-by-step instructions are below to read as well.

socks, string, foam balls, and pom poms

Snowman Ornaments Supplies

  • White baby socks (0-6 months)- Mine were Gerber brand and came from Walmart, but these white baby socks on Amazon are the same size and style.
  • White foam balls- I used these mini foam balls and these small foam balls from Oriental Trading but you can also get them from Amazon here (mini balls) and here (small balls).
  • String, twine, or yarn
  • Straight pins with colored heads
  • Black and orange Sharpie
  • Felt or scrap fabric (any color or pattern works)
  • Colored pom poms
  • Glue gun
  • Ornament hooks (Mine were only $1 at Walmart)

Creating the Snowman Christmas Ornaments Shape

First we’ll need to make the basic snowman body. Open up the baby sock with your fingers and place the larger foam ball inside, all the way down to the toe of the sock.

Add the next smaller foam ball to the sock and push it all the way down.

Twist the top of the sock above the foam balls nice and tight, then fold the top down over the foam ball to make a hat for the homemade snowman.

Wrap a small piece of string or twine around the snowman’s neck and tie it tightly in the back. Trim the loose string ends.

Making the Homemade Snowman Ornaments Face

Now that we have the snowman body done, let’s make his cute face.

hand holding straight pin and black Sharpie marker

Pull out 3 straight pins with colored heads. Use an orange Sharpie to color the head of the pin orange (this will be his nose).

Use a black Sharpie to color the other two pin heads black for his two eyes.

Let the pins dry for a minute before inserting into the snowman’s face.

After a minute, simply press in the two eyes and then the orange nose.

Adding the Snowman Accessories

Our snowman is looking pretty cute already, but let’s add some color!

Take a piece of fabric or felt and cut a thin strip to make a scarf. You can use any fabric you have on hand, even an old t-shirt if you’d like!

Small snowman with red scarf and hat

Decide how long you want the scarf to be, then trim off the end. Make small upward cuts at the scarf ends to make it look like a real scarf.

Use a glue gun or quick dry tacky glue to attach the scarf around the snowman’s neck.

Glue a matching colored pom pom to the top of the snowman’s hat to finish him off.

Hanging Your Snowman Christmas Tree Ornaments

I wanted these snowman ornaments to have a clean, modern feel so I didn’t want to use colored ribbon or string to hang them. This would totally work though if you wanted to hang your diy snowman ornaments that way!

snowman ornament with hook on back

I didn’t want to see anything hanging from the back or tops of my snowman ornaments, so I used ornament hooks. I hooked one end into the back of each snowman head and hat, then used the other hook end to hang the snowmen.

This worked perfectly. Aren’t they ADORABLE?!

I’m so proud of these cute little homemade snowman ornaments and can’t wait to make even more.
